Ring's Grand Opening Celebration

The Ring Neighborhood Library celebrated its Grand Opening on Tuesday, December 7, 2010. The event was planned and hosted by the Houston Public Library Foundation.

Distinguished guests are as follows:

Brenda Stardig - Houston City Council Member, District A
Dr. Rhea Brown Lawson - Houston Public Library Director
Harriet Calvin Lattimer - First Vice-Chair, Houston Public Library Foundation

Special Guests:

Peter and Ann Brown - Former Houston City Council Member and Wife
Anne Schlumberger Brown - The Anchorage Foundation of Texas

Also noted is that many Houston Public Library Foundation members, Houston Public Library staff and local community members were in attendance.

Facility improvements include the addition of a meeting room, a wonderful new front entrance, accessibility upgrades and a fiberoptic Internet connection. Other upgrades include, but are not limited to, parking lot upgrades, new flooring, an aesthetically pleasing mixture of refurbished and new furniture and new slat wall accessories to be used for attractive displays.

The Ring Neighborhood Library staff wishes to thank everyone who directly contributed or supported the library's renovation. We are extremely excited and look forward to serving our customers in our new renovated facility!

"A Christmas Carol" at the Library

LSS Dean Turner presented a dramatic reading of a condensed version of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" in Hillendahl's meeting room on December 9th. He also performed this version for the 5th grade classes at Westwood Elementary School on December 16th and at Brookhollow Adult Day Care and Activity Center on December 17th.

Teen Crafts at Hillendahl

Recent crafts for teens at Hillendahl Neighborhood Library included a beaded key chain (that looks hard but is really easy) a CD case photo album, complete with marbleized paper, photo frame decorating, and holiday beaded bracelets. Another popular craft Hillendahl has hosted for several years is the "jars filled with colored sand" craft.

Recent craft programs designed for teens at Hillendahl included a beaded keychain,which looks hard but is actually easy, a CD case photo album craft, picture frame decorating, and a holiday beaded bracelet craft.
Another popular craft offered each year is the colored sand in a jar craft.

Dean Turner Takes the Library on the Road

Hillendahl Neighborhood Library Service Specialist Dean Turner presented Edgar Allan Poe's perennial favorite "The Raven" to 5 English classes at Northbrook High School in November 2010. Dean was gratified and delighted that no matter how vociferous the classes were before the reading, the students listened in silence once he commenced. He also introduced these classes to Tutor.com and the Teen Health and Wellness database. Last school year, Dean was invited to perform monologues from Arthur Miller's classic "The Crucible" for these classes, and he hopes to reprise this presentation this year. Also in November, Dean visited the Boys and Girls Club in Spring Branch, where he presented booktalks to a girls' group. In October, Dean visited the Brookhollow Adult Day Care and Activity Center with Collier LSS Krista Lewis-Abedrabbo, where Krista and Dean read spooky selections and conducted a craft.
